AWARDS
All of the projects at the Interior Alaska Science Fair will be judged at least twice. They are judged initially and most thoroughly by invited members of the Fairbanks area scientific community.
First, second, third and participation awards will be made, based on the total number of points awarded by the judges. Classroom entries will be entered for display and will be judged. Classroom entries are welcome and judged at the Interior Alaska Science Fair.
The evening of the judging day, the projects are reviewed by the Science Fair Calibrators. The students are not present for this part of the process. The calibrators are a group of science educators from the Fairbanks North Star Borough School District that are recognized leaders in science curriculum and teaching. They have been a little known but very important part of the Interior Alaska Science Fair for over 15 years. They will review each project to make sure that every student receives credit for specific grade level abilities and that each project fits within the rules and guidelines of the Interior Alaska Science Fair. They use the initial judges' recommendation along with any calibration information to award the first, second, or third place ribbons.
In addition, over twenty community science organizations review the projects for awards. They generously give awards to noteworthy projects in their areas of expertise and interest. These additional awards will be presented at a special ceremony, The Douglas Schamel Awards Ceremony at the close of the Interior Alaska Science Fair on the last day. Please consult the displays at the fair for a list of the generous organizations that donate these awards and the organizations who donate their time and resources to the science fair. Also, a notice of the times for the special awards presentation will be displayed at the fair.
SPECIAL NOTE: If you or a member of your family is part of a community organization that would like to recognize some of our fine projects with an award of your own, please contact Sue Hull. Thanks in advance.
